Protesters rally over funding for Christian schools in Israel

ImageEPAImageStudents at the schools were among those protesting on Sunday

Protesters have gathered in front of the Israeli prime minister's office to demand greater funds for Christian schools.

Private Christian schools receive some state funding but protesters say it is lower than that given to equivalent Jewish schools.

They say their funding has been reduced in an effort to make them join the Israeli public school system.

Israel's Christians come overwhelmingly from its Arab minority.

The country's 47 Christian schools have been on strike since the beginning of the school year on 1 September.

Ibrahim Fakhouri, a parent from Nazareth, was at the demonstration and said he believed Christian schools were being discriminated against.

"As citizens of this country, we are law obeying citizens, and we deserve equal rights," he told AP.

Arab members of parliament were also at the demonstration.

In response to the protest the education ministry said that "Christian schools are funded in an equal manner as other recognized but unofficial schools in the State of Israel," according to the Jerusalem Post.

It reported the ministry as saying it "is having meetings with representatives of the educational institutes".

Saudi Arabia to cut spending after oil price decline

ImageAFP

Saudi Arabia will cut spending and delay some state projects after the recent decline in the price of oil, Finance Minister Ibrahim al-Assaf said.

Talking to broadcaster CNBC Arabia, he said the country was in a good position to manage low oil prices.

Saudi Arabia, the world's largest oil exporting country, has maintained its production levels despite a collapse in the price of oil.

Oil is trading at less than $50 per barrel, half the price of a year ago.

"We have built reserves, cut public debt to near-zero levels and we are now working on cutting unnecessary expenses while focusing on main development projects and on building human resources in the kingdom," he said in the interview.

Some areas of the economy will still receive investment, he said, as the country tries to improve industries outside energy.

"Projects in sectors such as education, health and infrastructure are not only important for the private sector but also for the long-term growth of the Saudi economy," he said. He did not give details of where cuts would happen.

It may issue bonds, or Islamic bonds known as sukuk to finance some spending, he said.

The kingdom has more than $600bn in reserves it can draw upon should expenditure outstrip income from oil exports.

Anish Kapoor's Dirty Work sculpture vandalised again

ImagePAImageVandals scrawled phrases in white paint on the work and rocks nearby

A sculpture by Anish Kapoor on show at France's Palace of Versailles has been vandalised for a second time.

The huge installation, called Dirty Work, was covered with slogans, some of which were anti-Semitic.

Described by the artist as suggesting "the vagina of the queen who took power", the work was splattered with paint in June before being cleaned.

But this time Mr Kapoor said he would not remove the graffiti, in order to highlight intolerance in society.

"The sculpture will now carry the scars of this renewed attack. I will not allow this act of violence and intolerance to be erased.

"Dirty Corner will now be marked with hate and I will preserve these scars as a memory of this painful history. I am determined that art will triumph."

French President Francois Hollande called the vandalism "hateful and anti-Semitic", while Prime Minister Manuel Valls warned that the perpetrators would be severely punished.

The Palace at Versailles was once home to Marie Antoinette, who was guillotined during the French Revolution.

Kapoor has recently distanced himself from his comments comparing the sculpture to a vagina, saying the work was open to interpretation.

BBC Charter renewal: Lord Hall sets out corporation's plans

ImageAFP / Getty ImagesImageTony Hall is set to make a series of speeches about the future of the BBC in the run-up to charter renewal

The BBC is to propose an expansion of the World Service - including its first radio broadcasts to North Korea - as it sets out plans for its own future.

A children's iPlayer and a pool of 100 local reporters who would share work with newspapers are also planned.

Director general Tony Hall will say the aim is to turn the BBC into "an open platform for British creativity".

The BBC is laying out its plans as part of negotiations with the government ahead of charter renewal in 2016.

'Polar opposite'

The government launched a consultation on the BBC's Royal Charter, which sets out the purpose of the BBC and how it will be governed, in July, promising to ask "hard questions" about the corporation's size and ambition.

As part of that process the BBC is setting out its own plans which include:

A pool of reporters to provide impartial reporting on councils and public services that could be used by both the BBC and other local news outletsA hub for data journalism, in partnership with a leading university, that would make BBC expertise in data journalism available to local newsgroupsa children's-only iPlayer - iPlay - featuring not just television programmes but blogs, podcasts, games and educational tools is another of the proposalsEither a satellite TV service for Russian speakers or a bigger digital presence on platforms such as YouTube and its Russian equivalent, RutubeA daily news programme for North Korea, broadcast on short wave radioThe BBC Arabic Service is to offer more regional content, with increased coverage of North Africa and the Middle EastA news service for Ethiopia and Eritrea on medium wave and short wave

Another new venture is expected to link up BBC programmes with material from external partners, such as the Tate, the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Science Museum - from where Lord Hall will make his announcement on Monday.

He will say: "We will strengthen the things people love about the BBC while making them fit for the new age.

"Let me be clear, an open BBC is a million miles away from an expansionist ambition. Indeed it is the polar opposite.

"It comes from the desire to partner and share. It comes from the recognition that technology gives us the opportunity to do things very differently."

Lord Hall is unlikely to detail how the corporation will "slim down" in the face of further funding cuts - despite the government recently ordering the BBC to cover the £600 million cost of providing free television licences for over-75s.

The corporation also took on the cost of the World Service last year, as part of the 2010 licence fee settlement.

However, the BBC is expected to ask the government for money to fund the world services - which it will match with funds raised by commercial enterprises such as BBC World News. Licence fee income will not be used.

The World Service proposals are part of an ongoing battle against state-sponsored news organisations such as Al-Jazeera, China Central Television (CCTV) and RT (previously Russia Today), which command huge resources and now broadcast to viewers in the UK.

The expansion was signalled earlier this year in the BBC's Future Of News report, which warned: "In many parts of the world, there is not more free expression but less. The need for the BBC World Service... to provide independent, reliable information to people who sorely need it is growing."

'Guatemalan Spring' underway as polls open

Ex-President Perez Molina in court over alleged involvement in corruption scandal, as polling stations open.

Guatemala City, Guatemala - Polling booths have opened in Guatemala, just days after the arrest of the country's president on corruption charges.

As 7.5 million eligible Guatemalans prepared to cast their ballots, calm prevailed as a fresh mood swept through the country.

Tens of thousands of people have in recent months taken to the streets in peaceful protests. And now they got what they were calling for.

Their former president, Otto Perez Molina, is in court being questioned over his alleged involvement in a massive corruption scandal, dubbed "La Linea", or The Line, in which importers gave bribes to avoid paying customs duty.

Al Jazeera talks to Alejandro Maldonado

Earlier this week congress voted to lift his immunity from prosecution. That opened the door to a string of events from which Guatemala is still reeling. The following day a warrant was issued for the president's arrest. A few hours later he resigned.

He was in court the next day and remanded in custody because of fears he might flee the country - moving from the presidential palace to a jail cell in just a few days.

The inquiry is continuing, as a judge weighs whether a full trial should go ahead. Perez Molina says he is innocent.

The attorney general, Thelma Aldana, who ordered the arrest warrant, told Al Jazeera that she has more than 90,000 recorded telephone messages and enough evidence to try the man who appointed her last year. She is clear on what her role is.

"We have to reform the laws," she said. "But also our attitudes to strengthen our institutions to make it clear that no one is above the law."

The new interim president, Alejandro Maldonado, sworn in on Thursday, also backs the changes. He was the vice president who only took office in May when his predecessor, Roxana Baldetti, resigned after accusations that she, too, was involved in La Linea.

'This is an opportunity'

President Maldonado called on protesters to remain vigilant, not to relax.

"This is an opportunity," he said. "They cannot rest, they must keep the pressure on the politicians, the media must keep investigating and the people must accompany them. If they go back to sleep, the corruption will return because it's a plague which infests everything."

He will only hold office for 133 days until a new president is chosen during elections expected to run over two rounds, starting on Sunday.

Recent events have obliged the long list of candidates to emphasize their honesty and condemn corruption.

But the Guatemalan electorate has grown cynical and suspicious of both politics and politicians.

Corruption scandals are nothing new in Guatemala or much of the rest of Latin America.

What's different in Guatemala now is that impunity no longer appears to reign. Indignant demonstrators marching to protest against corruption scandals in Brazil and Chile are watching with interest.

Inside Story: Can corruption be wiped out in Guatemala?

Berdardo Silva, one of the protest leaders celebrating outside the court in Guatemala City where Perez Molina was being questioned, said: "We have been demanding the resignation of corrupt politicians. Now we have seen the resignation of the leader of a band of corrupt officials - Otto Perez Molina - who happened to be the president of Guatemala."

Among the favourites in the elections are two experienced politicians trying to convince voters that they are clean in what many see as a dirty game.

They are Sandra Torres, the ex-wife of former president Alvaro Colom and Manuel Baldizon, defeated by Perez Molina in the 2012 elections. Baldizon's running mate is being investigated for money laundering.

The other clear leader is television comedian Jimmy Morales, whose main attraction is his lack of political experience.

Protesters have named recent events the "Guatemalan Spring" and the elections now provide a chance to nurture the seeds they helped to plant.

Austrian aid convoy heads for Hungary to help refugees

Volunteers in 140 vehicles, risking fines for violating human trafficking laws, head to Hungary to pick up refugees.

The convoy, loaded with food, water, clothing and stuffed animals, was headed to Nickelsdorf on the Hungarian border [Reuters]

Volunteers in a convoy of around 140 vehicles have set out from Vienna to cross into Hungary to distribute aid to refugees and bring them back to Austria.

Onlookers chanted "Say it loud, say it clear, refugees are welcome here" as the activists - organised via Facebook and loaded with food, water, sanitary products, warm clothing and stuffed animals - set forth from outside a football stadium on Sunday.

Thousands of refugees reach Germany

People taking part ran the risk of violating laws on human trafficking, police said, but officers were on hand just to provide security and guide traffic.

The convoy aimed to cross into Hungary after stopping at the refugee reception centre in Nickelsdorf on the Hungarian border.

Kurto Wendt, an Austrian organiser of the campaign, told the Reuters news agency that he was not scared of being arrested in Hungary.

"Everyone would really be crazy if they arrest people who support what they have decided politically, namely to let people move on to Austria. The risk that we are taking is so small compared with what the refugees are going through," he said.

Austria and Germany have thrown open their borders to the wave of refugees making their way north and west from the Middle East, Africa and elsewhere. Hungary has been letting the human tide move on after holding it up for days last week.

A car taking part in a convoy of around 140 vehicles leaving for Hungary from Vienna [Reuters]

Asked why the group was acting if refugees could now board buses or trains for the Austrian border, Wendt said: "Ten children were hospitalised overnight. The people are hungry, with poor clothing. Every day that you don't get people to safety they can die, so we have to do this immediately."

Buses deployed

After days of confrontation and chaos, Hungary deployed more than 100 buses overnight to take thousands of the refugees who had streamed there from southeast Europe to the Austrian frontier.

Inside Story: Desperate journeys

Al Jazeera's Mohammed Jamjoom, reporting from Nickelsdorf, where the convoy was headed, said every refugee he had spoken to "was glad they left the horrendous experience they said they had in Hungary these past few days".

Also on Sunday, Pope Francis called on every European parish, religious community, monastery and sanctuary to take in one refugee family, as thousands of people continued to stream into Germany via Austria.

The pope said the Vatican would open its doors to two refugee families, but provided few details as he addressed tens of thousands of people in St. Peter's Square.

On Saturday, Finland's Prime MinisterJuha Sipila  offered his private home in northern Finland to refugees.

Kurdish group claims deadly attack on Turkish troops

Warplanes launch retaliatory attacks after PKK says it killed 15 soldiers in ambush in southeastern Hakkari province.

PKK's demands have of late focused on greater autonomy and rights for Turkey's Kurdish population [Reuters]

Several Turkish soldiers have been killed and others wounded in a major attack in Hakkari province carried out by fighters of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), according to both the Kurdish group and official Turkish media.

There was no immediate official casualty toll but the Turkish military immediately scrambled fighter jets to strike PKK targets after Sunday's attack in the country's southeast.

The official Anatolia news agency said the attack on two military vehicles in a convoy in the Daglica district of Hakkari, a known PKK stronghold, had left several soldiers dead and others wounded.

Q&A: Turkey's fight against PKK is 'legitimate'

The PKK described the assault as an "act of sabotage", in a statement posted on the website of its military wing, the People's Defence Forces (HPG).

It said that PKK members ambushed the convoy near Daglica village in Yuksekova district of Hakkari, close to Turkey's borders with Iran and Iraq.

"An attack from several sides left 15 soldiers dead, and a large amount of weapons were seized in the action," the statement read.

Casualties confirmed

The number of casualties could not be independently verified but in a televised statement Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan confirmed an attack had taken place in Hakkari.

He also indicated that several soldiers were killed in the attack.

Anatolia said Turkish F-4 and F-16 jets were deployed to carry out strikes in retaliation against 12 targets controlled by the PKK.

Many "terrorists" were killed in the air strikes, Anatolia said, without giving a precise toll.

Erdogan reacted to the attack during a live television interview on A-Haber channel, saying: "A mine attack has been staged. There will be a very particular and decisive fight there. We are very sad.

"The weather conditions were unfavourable. A struggle was being waged under such conditions."

He said the attack happened during a "clean-up operation" against PKK fighters.

In a sign of the gravity of the attack, Ahmet Davutoglu, Turkey's prime minister, broke off a trip to Konya to watch a national football game and summoned an emergency security meeting in Ankara, Anatolia said.

Davutoglu was taken in his motorcade to attend the security meeting with officials including Hulusi Akar, the army chief of staff, and Hakan Fidan, spy chief.

Three-decade insurgency

The PKK has been staging daily attacks against the Turkish armed forces as the military presses an over month-long operation against the group in southeastern Turkey and northern Iraq.

The violence has shattered a 2013 ceasefire aimed at assisting the search for a final peace deal to end the PKK's three-decade insurgency that has claimed tens of thousands of lives.

The PKK initially took up arms in 1984 in search of an independent Kurdish state for Turkey's Kurdish minority, although latterly the demands focused on greater autonomy and rights.

Earlier on Sunday, two Turkish police were killed in an attack in the Sur district of southeastern city of Diyarbakir that was attributed to the PKK, security sources told AFP news agency.

At least 70 members of the security forces have been killed since July in attacks blamed on the PKK, while official media have claimed that at least 967 fighters have been killed.

The unrest comes at a explosive time in Turkey as the country prepares to hold snap elections on November 1 following June 7 polls where Erdogan's ruling AK Party lost its overall majority.

Nigeria's Anti-corruption Unit, ICPC Accused Of Covering Up Corrupt Acts By Former Inspector General of Police, Okiro

A network of anti-corruption groups has accused the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC) of engaging in a cover up of corrupt acts by Mike Okiro, a former Inspector General of Police who currently serves as the chairman of the Police Service Commission.

In a joint statement issued today, the Civil Society Network Against Corruption (CSNAC) and the Network on Police Reform in Nigeria (NOPRIN), expressed dismay that the ICPC had failed to take appropriate action on a petition that detailed serious acts of corruption by Mr. Okiro. Mike Okiro

Specifically, the two anti-corruption organizations remarked that Aaron Kaase, a member of the Police Service Commission (PSC), had written a petition to the ICPC accusing Mr. Okiro of illegally appropriating N350 million after the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) had refused to approve the transaction.

According to Mr. Kaase’s allegation, the BPE had denied Mr. Okiro’s request to pay N350 million to contractors nominated by the former IGP for the training of the PSC staff during the recently concluded 2015 general elections.

Despite the BPE’s rejection of the proposal, Mr. Okiro “illegally appropriated the N350 million and spent N217 on the training program,” said the two anti-corruption groups, adding that the chairman of the Police Service Commission “decided not to return the remaining sum of N133 million and other over coated rates which he diverted and converted.”

The statement observed that the ICPC “investigated the allegation and confirmed the diversion and criminal conversion of the said sum of N133 million by Mr. Okiro,” but “instead of recommending Mr. Okiro for prosecution for stealing and diversion of public fund the Independent Corrupt Practices & Other Related Offences Commission ‘advised’ him to refund the said sum of N133 to the coffers of the Federal Government.”

According to the joint statement, the “ICPC has no power whatsoever to advise indicted criminal suspects to refund the money allegedly stolen by them.”

The two groups also noted that the ICPC also confirmed an allegation that Mr. Okiro received N4.6 million in 2013 for a trip to the United States that he never made. Their statement expressed shock that the ICPC failed to make a strong recommendation even though the commission had also confirmed that Mr. Okiro used several fronts to collect various sums of money from the PSC.

The statement also accused the ICPC of deliberately refusing to “direct that Mr. Kaase be recalled from suspension for exposing the corrupt practices of the PSC chairman.

“In view of the foregoing we urge the Presidential Advisory Council to recommend the recall of Mr. Kaase from illegal suspension and the immediate prosecution of Mr. Mike Okiro for corrupt practices without any further delay,” the two anti-corruption organizations suggested in a joint statement signed by Olanrewaju Suraju for CSNAC and Okechukwu Nwagwuma of NOPRIN.

(See Photos) Internet Explodes As Lionel Messi Meets NFL ‘Giant’ Star, JJ Watt

The Barcelona and Argentina legend posed for a picture and got a special game jersey from the 2014 Defensive Player of the Year.

“The two best football players on the planet have finally come face to face.

No, Lionel Messi didn’t cross swords with Cristiano Ronaldo once more – he met JJ Watt.

The Houston Texans defensive end is widely regarded as the finest NFL player in the game and was awarded Defensive Player of the Year last season after a remarkable campaign.

The two met as Messi’s Argentina continued their tour of the US with a 7-0 thrashing of Bolivia where the Barcelona man scored twice.

And Watt was in awe of the little maestro tweeting: “The best football player on the planet”.

It’s certainly quite the scene with the 6’5″, 20 stone Watt dwarfing Messi by a considerable margin.

The little and large image spread like wildfire over social media with over 20,000 retweets in just 24 hours.

Messi’s teammate Sergio Aguero was equally enamoured with Watt posting a picture to Instagram."

7-Year-Old Narrates How Her Dad Gives Her Money After Making Her Give Him A Blowjob

Chukwuemeka Odunzie, started defiling his daughter, who is in primary 3, early last year at their house at Ojokoro Housing Estate, Meiran, Ijaiye, Lagos. The girl said: “My daddy usually gives me money after touching my private part or putting his penis in my mouth.” On her part, the girl’s mother, Mrs Odunzie, said: “Last year, my son told me that his younger sister was fond of playing with her private parts.

I then talked to her, scolded her and sometimes beat her. There was a time I told my husband. All he said was that I should take her to any of these white garment churches. I was alarmed when one day, while we were in the sitting room, she started touching and playing with herself? Immediately, I called her inside the room and asked her if anyone was fiddling with her private parts.

She said it was her father that always touched her private parts and that after touching her private parts, he would give her money. I confronted my husband but he denied. I reported a case of defilement to Ebenezer Divisional Police and he was arrested. The police gave me a report to take my daughter to the hospital.

The doctor said there had been no penetration but that there is an opening in her virgina and advised that the victim be tested for infection. By the time we came back from the hospital, the IPO said it was a family issue and that we should go home and settle the case. Members of his family were shouting, saying that I had no right to report the case to the police, that it was a family issue that should be treated as one. They pressurized me till I withdrew the case, after which he promised not to defile our daughter again.”

Chukwu admitted that it was only once that he abused the girl and that he was not doing it for occult reasons…… so there is no cause for alarm…..

Lagos State Government today announced that trailers and articulated vehicles are no longer allowed to ply the city between the hours of 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. to prevent accidents following the fatal one that occurred on September 2nd.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, Oluseyi Whenu, disclosed this at a meeting in Lagos with the leadership of the various transport unions in the State.

He explained that the restriction was to ensure strict enforcement of the Road Traffic Law, which, according to him, was often violated by the trailer drivers.

He said the government would henceforth go tough on any trailer that contravenes the law.

You Have Failed To Deliver Your 100 Day In Office Promises – Nigerian Students Tell Buhari

The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has accused President Buhari of not fulfilling his ‘100 days in office’ promises which he made during his campaign. In a letter tagged “Let the change be realistic, not a mantra” signed by NANS Vice President on National Affairs, Comrade Timileyin Gbenga Ayenuro, the student body expressed its disappointment..

Read it below:-

The National Association of Nigerian Students [NANS], the apex students’ body in Nigeria, expresses disappointment and worries over the non-fulfillment of the 100-day in office promises that President Muhammadu Buhari earlier made during the 2015 Presidential Election and the denial of such vows by the media machinery of The Presidency.

RECALL ON BUHARI’S PROMISES DURING CAMPAIGN

During Mohammadu Buhari’s Presidential campaign, it should be recalled that a public letter was published by the President titled, “My Covenant”. He made no fewer than thirteen promises to Nigerian in the document which are: Reduction of fuel price to N45 per liter; Subsidize oil price at $100 a barrel; pay the poorest 25 million people N5, 000 every month; guarantee 40,000 megawatts of electricity in four years; Post NYSC Stipends; provision of Free meal ticket per day for all Nigerian school children and also provision of three million jobs in his first year in office.

To the utmost surprise of every Nigerian students, President Muhammadu Buhari, has not only failed to deliver on his numerous “100-day in Office promises”, the president and his media machinery are intentionally and falsely, in the bid to cover the ineptitude of failing the “100-day integrity test” in the court of public opinion, denying these lofty promises made during the electioneering campaign.

Also, he promised to build four refineries in one year; provide free education to all Nigerian children, conquer Boko Haram in two months, payment of allowance to Graduate job seekers, Tackling Child Labour, Graduate Employment, Nationwide Environmental Sanitation Plan, No foreign Health Care for Government officials, 20% Education Budget, Just Farm, Government Buys Policy, Educating the Girl Child, An Independent EFCC and ICPC, Establishment of Office of Public Defender, Protecting Freedom of Speech, More Government spending on Health, Improving National Security, Prompt and stress free pension payment, Addressing Ethno Religious Tolerance, A fair deal with women and Corruption Free Election.

With the aforementioned lofty promises, Nigerians taught the change they expected had come. But amazingly, after 100 days in office, Buhari whom they described as ‘Baba Go Slow’ because of his sluggishness in executing government policies has not achieved any of the promises.

NIGERIANS EXPECTATIONS

Muhammadu Buhari should learn that Nigerians mean business and ready to see developments around the nooks and crannies of the country. Nigerians believe that terrorism will be a thing of the past, corruption will be a forgone issue. Nigerians believe that the new president should find a lasting solution to the backlog of unpaid salaries, perennial fuel scarcity, fuel subsidy regime, cost of governance, institutionalized corruption, insecurity, erratic power supply, poorly-developed education and all other human endeavors. The clock is ticking!

OUR TAKE ON RECENT APPOINTMENTS

Also, it is disheartening and perhaps, indicative of the direction the administration of President Buhari is heading with respect to the lopsided appointments made so far. He is just being driven by the passion to salvage a ‘perceived’ sinking state, irrespective of who is negatively affected. He needs to know that we have a federation that should be run through established laws. All the federating units must be part of the government to avoid unnecessary litigation against constitutional violations. There are still many more appointments to be made and Nigerians are watching to see what will happen.

IMPLEMENTATION OF NATIONAL CONFAB REPORT

Furthermore, we urge the Federal Government under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari to implement the recommendations contained in the National Conference report because it is the only way to solve Nigeria’s myriad of political and economic problems. Buhari must do whatever is necessary to ensure the implementation of the confab report. The implementation will further re-launch and revamp the nation. Non- implementation of the report will amount to turning deaf ear to the voice of the people. Since governance is about people, government should do what the people want.

WORDS OF ENCOURGEMENT TO NIGERIANS

We still enjoin all well-meaning Nigerians to repose their faith in solemn assurance of a new, united, peaceful and prosperous Nigeria and join hands together with the Federal Government to re-invent governance, entrench freedom and democratic ethos, create jobs, eradicate poverty, build infrastructure, sustain businesses, secure lives and properties, re-enact the essence and value of peaceful co-existence among Nigerians and restore the lost glories, hopes, faith and confidence of our people under this current administration.

Buhari’s Undisclosed Share At Panalpina W.T Revealed – Daily Post

President Muhammadu Buhari may not have disclosed all his assets and investments in the Asset Declaration document he submitted to the Code of Conducts Bureau, CCB.

A document obtained by DAILY POST on Sunday indicated that President Buhari allegedly has a huge share in Panalpina World Transport (Nigeria) Limited, which he did not disclose in the list of his assets made public by his media aides last week.

The assets declaration by the president has continued to attract mixed reactions from members of the public since it was publicized last Thursday.

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, had in its reaction to the asset declaration by the president said that there was no truth in the published list of assets, adding that the president was not honest and was deceiving Nigerians.

The document obtained by our correspondent, a Certified True Copy from the CAC, indicated that President Buhari has shares in Panalpina World Transport (Nigeria) Limited, a multinational company.

According to the document, President Buhari bought 90,000 shares in Panalpina World Transport (Nigerian) limited on 1st August 1995 but this share was not included in his asset declaration document.

The document reads in parts: “Allotment of shares of 15,000,000 received in response with Rights Issue of 3,000,000 was capitalized and used to pay up in full 15,000,000 Bonus shares.

The subscribers of the share were “(1) Buhari (Major General) Mohammadu – 90,000; address 7 Aliu Garaki Rd Kaduna. (2) Babangida (Gen. rtd) Ibrahim – 15,000; (3) Williams (Prof) Olufemi – 15,000; (4) Gana (The Estate) Baba – 15,000” among others.

On 3rd September 2015, President Muhammadu Buhari declared that he had about N30 million in his bank account before taking office on May 29. The president declared, however, that he had shares in Berger Paints, Union Bank and Skye Bank but there was no mention of his share at Panalpina.

Details of the president’s asset declaration now being verified by the Code of Conduct Bureau also showed that he owns five houses in Kaduna, Daura, Kano and Abuja. He also has two undeveloped plots of land, one in Kano and the other in Port Harcourt as well as farms, an orchard, ranch, livestock including 270 cattle, 25 sheep, five horses, a variety of birds and a number of economic trees.

His media aides are yet to react to this new development

Buhari Can No Longer Pretend To Be Poor, He’s One Of The Wealthiest Nigerians – Musa

NATIONAL leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday, took a swipe at President Muhammadu Buhari and his Vice, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo over their asset declaration, saying that they were deceiving Nigerians. Noting that President Buhari last December declared that he had only N1 million in his account, the PDP wondered how the money suddenly rose to N30 million by May 29 after an expensive campaign. And this is apart from assets in his wife’s name.

This came as first civilian Governor of old Kaduna State, Alhaji Balarabe Musa said that with the declaration, Buhari is a wealthy man and can no longer pretend to be poor. Meantime, Human rights lawyer, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, said the presidency disclosing after 100 days of Buhari’s inauguration implied that he was forced to do so just as Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG) chieftain, Mr Bisi Adegbuyi described the move as a welcome development and urged all public officials to emulate Buhari and Osinbajo.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metu, the PDP described the declaration as “a deceptive window-dressing to hoodwink unsuspecting Nigerians” because ‘’it is a mere list of some belongings of President Buhari and Vice President Osinbajo in place of the pledge made to Nigerians by Mr. President as candidate of the APC on March 18, 2015, at exactly 5 pm.’’

The PDP recalled that the President, in his own words had told Nigerians, ‘I pledge to publicly declare my assets and liability and also encourage my political appointees to publicly declare their assets and liability,’ and observed that President Buhari and his vice failed to produce copies of their declarations detailing the exact nature and value of respective assets.

Metuh said: “The release of a mere list of belongings falls short of credibility, transparency and anti-corruption standards as well as exposes the proclivity of the present administration for deception. We have noted the release of a flimsy list of belongings of President Buhari and Vice President Osinbajo by the Presidency, who want such to pass as the public declaration of assets as pledged by the President.

“Nigerians are not deceived by this poor attempt at window-dressing designed by the Presidency to hoodwink the unsuspecting populace in a desperate bid to shore up its diminished image. We ask, is the resort to a mere list, instead of true copies of the declaration not a ploy to give the Presidency a window for denial in consonance with their widely observed inclination for flip flopping, backtracking and brazen denials of their statements and actions?

“All we want is credibility, integrity and sincerity of purpose. We are not questioning how a President, who by December last year, declared that he had only N1 million in his account, could suddenly now list N30 million in the same bank account by May 29, and after an expensive campaign; we are not yet demanding the public declaration of his assets in his wife’s name.

We are not even applauding the multiplication of his cows from 150 to 250 in a space of three months, arising from his dual and conflicting pronouncements on this issue. “What the PDP and discerning Nigerians demand is for Mr. President to always stand by his words and pledge. Mr. President, this is a mere list of your belongings and not public declaration of assets in fulfilment of your covenant with Nigerians.”

Buhari is multi-billionaire, can’t bring about change –Musa

On his part, Balarabe Musa, who was sacked from office in 1983 by Buhari, said that it was clear from the assets listed that the President that he is a multi-billionaire, who also wields enormous power and influence and cannot therefore be seen as a peasant committed to the well being of the less privileged.

Noting, however, that the declaration is better late than never, apparently referring to previous presidents, who did not care to make public their worth, he doubted what Buhari presented to the public, saying that it was at variance with the low profile and ‘poor man’ posture the president had wanted to foist on Nigerians.

He said: “Before the last election, Buhari had given us the erroneous impression that he was a poor man, requiring bank loans to buy nomination form and run his campaigns but now he has shown that he has cash of N30 million, huge investments in companies and banks and farm assets.

“By this declaration, it is clear that Buhari is one of the wealthy and influential Nigerians, who wield enormous power. He can therefore, no longer pretend to be among the poor masses and I doubt if he can still effect the change he promised the poor. We are therefore, waiting and watching to see the expected change.”

Emulate Buhari, Osinbajo, public officials urged Adegbuyi had a contrary view. He said: ‘’Nigerians have been clamouring for Buhari to declare his assets. In the course of the campaigns he promised to declare his assets. It is a welcome. We expect all other public officials to follow their example. ‘’However, my attitude to the war on corruption is that we should place emphasis on blocking the gate.

There is no question about it, President Buhari is a man of integrity and his strongest point is his widely acclaimed anti-corruption stance. We don’t have any problem with the president regarding his position on corruption but we must close the gate, which means devising institutional means of fighting corruption.’’

Action is belated– Adegboruwa

On his part, Adegboruwa, in a statement, said: “This action of the President, coming after Nigerians have made this demand upon him several months, is rather belated, serving no useful purpose presently. For the assets declaration to make any meaningful impact, it should have been declared voluntarily and without any prompting upon the President, by Nigerians.

“The implication of this is that the President was forced to declare his assets. Furthermore, it was in his covenant with Nigerians that the President made a solemn promise to publicly declare his assets, within the first 100 days of his administration."

Don’t Buy Cheap Android Phones From Popular Brands Instead Buy Tecno (Here’s Why)

samsung-galaxy-star-2-plus_a0ae
It’s another weekend, a time we pick up an erring part in mobile tech and thrash it out. This article was inspired by a comment from Mobilista Surajudeen, and we explore reasons why you shouldn’t buy low-end smartphones from popular phone brands.
There’s a general misconception people have with mobile phone makers. OK, for instance, If I asked, “What are the best Android phone brands?” The reply I expect to hear would be answers like Samsung, LG, Sony, and HTC. This is true. These aforementioned brands make the best Android phones you can see in the market, but then, there’s a limit to their greatness.
These popular brands make phones people love, but the great experience ends with their high end (and a few mid-range) phones. When it comes to low end devices, the likes of Samsung , LG, HTC and Sony are useless. Yes, you read it right. People buy them with the inner belief they’re getting something great, but trust me, the reverse is the case here.
If you want to buy a cheap Android device, look away from these popular brands because their low end devices are under specced and over priced. An experience with it may leave a bad taste in your mouth. If you must buy any of these popular brands, then save up and buy the very expensive ones. That’s when you know you’ve bought something worth celebrating.
There are many instances: Let’s pick out the Samsung J1. This is a phone released in 2015 but it comes with measly 512 MB RAM, and the price (at the time of writing this) is N20,330. It’s funny when you know you can get a 2 GB RAM Infinix Hot 2 for less or same price. Another case is the Galaxy Star 2 Plus, which Samsung used as a Hero deal during the Jumia Mobile Megathon. The phone has no 3G, carries just 512 MB RAM, 4GB internal memory and was priced at N17,000.
Outside Samsung, there’s a mid-range Sony device, Xperia M4 Aqua . You can imagine, the 8 GB version of this phone has just 1.26 GB usable memory. Even rooting and hacking cannot save the situation. Imagine shelling N40,000 and being faced with this problem. LG, and HTC are also culprits, when you look at their low-end devices, you see that they’re expensive compared to the offerings of Chinese brands.
If your budget for a new smartphone is at the region of N30,000, then stay away from big name brands. Rather look towards the likes of TECNO, Gionee, Innjoo etc. They offer way better value for money compared to those popular brands you know.
Oya rant your own Happy Weekend folks!!

All that glitters is not gold is a well-known saying, meaning that not everything that looks precious or true turns out to be so. This rightly applies to some road on Lekki Phase One in Lagos State, Southwest, Nigeria.
At the mention of Lekki, Nigerians strongly believe that you are in the rich people’s zone but even the rich also cry when they have to travel on bad roads.
So be Wise…. Why Commit crime just to make money to buy Mansion in Lekki and during Raining season Face this kind of Trouble….. Why not build that Mansion on the Mainland even in Ajegunle life is not as worst as this.
Be Wise!!

Army Bans Use Of Horses, Donkeys In Borno – See Why!!

Borno-State-Governor-Kashim-Shettima-e1435465960198
THE Nigerian Army has banned the use of horses and donkeys by the general public, particularly traditional rulers in Borno State.
The Army said the ban was necessary as members of terrorist group, Boko Haram, have turned to the animals as their means of transportation to attack and killed people in the state.
The ban was announced yesterday, in Maiduguri when spokesman of 7 Division of Nigerian Army, Col. Tukur Gusau, was supervising the destruction of over 2, 000 cartons of fish and meat seized from Boko Haram at Maiduguri destruction site.
He said the terrorists have resorted to the use of horses and called on the general public, especially traditional rulers to stop ridding on horses until further notice.
“Anyone found using a horse would be considered an insurgent,” he warned.
He disclosed that 2,000 cartons of smoke fish and dry meat that the insurgents carted away from innocent traders were seized for destruction.
“We invited you to witness the burning of N2, 000 cartons of smoked fish and meat, which they used in funding their terrorist activities in this state,” said Gusau
He therefore; called on the general public to assist and support “Operation Lafiya Dole” by promptly reporting suspicious movement of vehicles or persons loaded with supplies meant for Boko Haram terrorists.
