Ogun Police Arrest 120 Suspected Cultists

Security operatives deployed by the state commissioner of police, Abdulmajid Ali, have arrested 120 suspected cultists at various locations in Ogun state.

The detectives attached to the Agbara division of the command last week nabbed 84 suspected cultists in a forest at Imoshe, Igbesa, Ogun state while initiating new members.

In a statement issued by the command and signed by the state police spokesman, DSP Muyiwa Adejobi, three other suspects were also apprehended at Ilaro by policemen on anti crime patrol on Monday August 31, during their meeting in a hideout.

In a related development, working on a tip-off, the Special Anti Robbery Squad, Ogun state, pounced on another group of cultists who called themselves theSeadog at Ijeja area of Abeokuta on Tuesday September 1.

Some of the items recovered from them included; assorted charms, bottles of dry gin, broken bottles, and materials meant for initiation process.

They have confessed to the crime and the commissioner of police Ogun state, Abdulmajid Ali, immediately ordered that the suspects be handed over to the Department of Criminal Investigation and Intelligence, Eleweran-Abeokuta for proper investigation and prosecution.

SPORT NEWS: David De Gea’s move to Real Madrid off as paperwork late

SPN- David De Gea’s £29m move from Manchester United to Real Madrid has collapsed because the necessary paperwork was not submitted in time.

No official announcement has yet been made by either club.

As part of the deal to sell De Gea to Real, United were planning to bring Keylor Navas in the opposite direction.

There is no precedent for Spanish clubs being given additional time to conclude transfers as there is in England.

Blame for the failure to complete the deal is already being apportioned.

Who says what?

Reports in Spain claim United were responsible for the deal collapsing.

The line is that they did not get their paperwork to Spanish Football Federation headquarters until a minute after the 23:00 BST deadline.

In their defence, United say they have a receipt that proves they submitted the relevant documents in time.

It remains to be seen whether Real will appeal to world governing body Fifa, who are responsible for sanctioning international transfers.

What now for De Gea?

Well, if Real Madrid don’t appeal, or they do appeal and fail to push the transfer through, then he’ll be back at Old Trafford competing for a place in the United starting line-up.

He’ll be up against Sergio Romero, the Argentina number one, and Victor Valdes, who, like De Gea, was linked with other clubs but stayed.

First, though, De Gea, who has not played for United this season, must turn his attentions to international duty with Spain.

They have two Euro 2016 qualifying matches to negotiate, at home to Slovakia on 5 September and in Macedonia on 8 September.

What about United?

They seem pretty relaxed about it all.

If De Gea ends up staying, then they have a world-class keeper to call on. If he goes, then the Navas deal could still happen.

Unlike Real Madrid, United have a few more hours to get stuff done.

The transfer window may be shut in Spain, but it remains open until 18:00 BST on Tuesday for Premier League clubs.

According to French football journalist Philippe Auclair, the size of the transfer fee has left “people speechless in France”.

“He’s got good technique, good skills, he’s a good finisher, but he is still a raw product,” added Auclair. “We don’t know how far he can go.”

Trump, after Republican pledge, breaks from pack on Iran, gay marriage

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Leading Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump showed again on Friday he will not easily be bound to party orthodoxy, breaking from many of his rival's policy stances on issues from the Iran nuclear deal to the gay marriage fight in Kentucky.

In an interview with MSNBC, one day after signing the party's loyalty pledge to not run as an independent, Trump said he would work with the Obama administration's nuclear agreement with Iran, nevertheless calling it "a disastrous deal" and "a horrible contract."

Many of the 16 other Republicans seeking the party's nomination for the 2016 presidential election have vowed to undo the agreement. But Trump, a wealthy businessman, reiterated his view that too much money was at stake and his rivals were wrong to say they would rip it up.

"I love to buy bad contracts where key people go bust, and I make those contracts good," he said, adding that he would strictly enforce the Iran deal.

Trump took a different tack on the Kentucky battle over gay marriage. Some Republicans loudly backed Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis, who opted for jail time rather than issue any marriage licenses after the U.S. Supreme Court's June ruling in support of gay marriage, which goes against her religious beliefs.

"We are a nation of laws," Trump said. "You have to go with it. The decision's been made, and that's the law of the land."

Davis could authorize her deputies to sign the paperwork instead, he said. Her office began issuing licenses on Friday.

Public opinion polls show Trump leading rivals by double-digits.

"I'm not taking anything for granted," he told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program, acknowledging the wide Republican field. "I understand ... it is a marathon."

On the European refugee crisis, Trump said while the United States had its own border and immigration problems, the situation was "horrible." Few Republican presidential candidates have spoken out on the crisis, and even the White House has acknowledged it without announcing any action. The leading Democratic presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, also on Friday called for United States and other nations to act.

Asked whether the United States should accept more refugees fleeing violence in the Middle East, Trump said: "Possibly yes" but noted limited U.S. options to help.

On that point, he and other Republicans agree.

"We have our own problems; we have so many problems to solve," he said. "Our country is broken."

Akufo-Addo: I’m too old to steal Ghana’s money

Flagbearer of the largest opposition party NPP, Nana Akufo-Addo has said Ghana’s purse would be secured under his presidency where no kleptomaniac would be entertained.

Making a case for him to be elected to form the next government in the ruling party’s stronghold, Nana Akufo-Addo accused the government of wantonly dissipating the country’s resources.

The NPP presidential aspirant is in the Volta Region as the first stop of his nationwide tour dubbed “Arise and Build”. He was accompanied on the tour by his running mate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and other party officials.

Nana Akufo-Addo said Ghana has no reason to be wallowing in poverty today but for the “massive mismanagement and corruption” under the NDC government.
The NPP, he asserted, have the men and women with the mettle to work honestly for Ghana’s development.

“Where I am and how old I am at least, this is not the time I will start stealing anybody’s wealth,” Nana Akufo-Addo told an animated crowd on Thursday.

“We are coming to do a job for Ghana,” he emphasized.
Nana Akufo-Addo also addressed controversy surrounding his party’s call for a new register for the 2016 general elections. The NDC has rejected the call and accused the NPP of trying to disenfranchise people from the Volta Region.

“Some people are trying to turn our call for a new register into a tribal campaign, a discriminatory campaign,” Nana Akufo-Addo responded, adding that the NPP has nothing against the Volta region.

Only Ghanaians should be allowed to vote in the next elections, he stressed. “We are saying that Ghana’s election is for Ghanaians; Ghana’s election is not a West African election.”

He wondered why the government would have difficulty in agreeing with something that would ensure a clean register like has been done in other African countries including Ghana’s eastern neighbour, Togo.
The only agenda behind the call for a new register is simply a “Ghanaian agenda”, he explained.

The flagbearer was also highly confident that the party will overcome the internal wrangling that is badly affecting the fortunes of the party.
In another development, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, founder of the National Democratic Party is backing calls for a new register.

The former First Lady points to manual voting and counting of ballots as one of the reasons for protest associated with elections in the country.
It is her position that adopting electronic voting will restore confidence and credibility in the electoral process.

Houston punter Lechler wins bet by hitting Dallas video board

Houston Texans punter Shane Lechler used Thursday night's preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys to take part in a friendly wager among teammates.

During the fourth quarter, Lechler boomed a punt that hit the massive HD board that hangs over the field in AT&T Stadium. In doing so, he became the third punter to accomplish the feat and stands to eat well for a while because of it.

"I think I'm going to win multiple dinners," Lechler said, per the the Ft. Worth-Star Telegram. "I had a little wager going with some guys. I hit it twice in warm ups. I felt good about hitting it on that punt -- but not good enough to tell everybody not to run down the field. That's the first time I've had a do-over for hitting a scoreboard."

By virtue of hitting the bottom of the HD board, which hangs 90 feet above the field, the 16-year veteran was forced to re-kick. NFL rules state any punt that hits the HD board results in dead ball, with the clock being reset and the ball placed back at the original line of scrimmage.

Lechler joins former Tennessee Titans punter A.J. Trapasso and Cowboys punter Chris Jones as the only players to hit the video board.

‘You Are Yet To Publicly Declare Your Assets,’ PDP Tells Buhari, Osinbajo

Opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has described the assets declaration by President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President,Yemi Osinbajo as “a deceptive window-dressing to hoodwink unsuspecting Nigerians”.

The PDP however, observed that President Buhari and his vice failed to produce copies of their declarations, detailing the exact nature and value of respective assets.

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, in a statement on Friday said “the release of a mere list of belongings falls short of credibility, transparency and anti-corruption standards as well as exposes the proclivity of the present administration for deception.”

“We have noted the release of a flimsy list of belongings of President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo by the Presidency, who want such to pass as the public declaration of assets as pledged by the President.

“Nigerians are not deceived by this poor attempt at window-dressing designed by the Presidency to hoodwink the unsuspecting populace in a desperate bid to shore up its diminished image.

“We ask, is the resort to a mere list, instead of true copies of the declaration not a ploy to give the Presidency a window for denial in consonance with their widely observed inclination for flip flopping, backtracking and brazen denials of their statements and actions?

“All we want is credibility, integrity and sincerity of purpose. We are not questioning how a President, who by December last year, declared that he had only N1 million in his account, could suddenly now list N30 million in the same bank account by May 29, and after an expensive campaign; we are not yet demanding the public declaration of his assets in his wife’s name.

“We are not even applauding the multiplication of his cows from 150 to 250 in a space of three months, arising from his dual and conflicting pronouncements on this issue. What the PDP and discerning Nigerians demand is for Mr. President to always stand by his words and pledge.

“Mr. President, this is a mere list of your belongings and not public declaration of assets in fulfillment of your covenant with Nigerians

Meanwhile, civil society group, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), has hailed the public declaration of the assets, adding that the declaration has turned the page on transparency and accountability in Nigeria.

Why Buhari's Former CSO Was Also Sacked By SSS

Abdulrahman Mani, the former chief security officer (CSO) to President Muhammadu Buhari, is among those sacked by the State Security Service (SSS).

The most widely discussed sacking was that of Marilyn Ogar, the ex-spokesperson for the security service. It was alleged that she had been relieved of her duties because of bribery and professional misconduct. However, some believed that it was a political move against Ogar, who had been promoted under Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.

Premium Times reports that Mani was promoted during the transition period and was appointed as Buhari’s CSO.

However, Mani and the president’s ADC, Mohammed Abubakar, were involved in an argument over the deployment of military personnel responsible for the president’s inner security.

It was reported that when Lawal Daura was appointed SSS director general, Mani’s travails began, as the strained relationship between the two became noticeable. The former CSO was posted to Bayelsa state command, according to some sources, which many described as a punitive decision.

Daura purportedly convinced Buhari that a higher-ranking officer should act as the CSO. Soon Mani was re-posted to Aso Rock, but already as the president’s chief detail (position second in command to the CSO). Mani was reportedly unhappy with the development and refused to report to duty. One of the sources disclosed that this basically became the reason for his retirement.

Official information is yet to be provided on the matter.
